U.S. visa support for Canadians
ready for what’s next.
Hypothetical example: a Torbay respiratory therapist accepts a verbal U.S. hospital offer with a start date eight weeks away. Her husband runs a two-van plumbing and heating business from their garage and wants to know whether he should sell it, wind it down or try to open something similar south of the border. Their daughter's school year ends in June. Three calendars are now competing: the hospital's, the business's and the school's, and none of them is the immigration calendar. The purpose of this page is to sort those dates into the ones that are fixed, the ones that are negotiable and the ones that depend on a government decision nobody in Torbay controls.
Each route on this site fits a different fact pattern. TN suits a Canadian citizen with a prearranged professional position in a USMCA-listed occupation and the credential that occupation requires. L-1A and L-1B suit an employee who has spent a continuous year with a company abroad that is related to the U.S. employer, moving into a managerial, executive or specialized-knowledge role. E-2 suits a Canadian who is putting substantial money at risk in a real business they will run. EB-5 suits an investor whose capital will create ten jobs. Gold Card is an official gift-based framework layered on existing immigrant categories rather than a category of its own.
Choose what brings you here. Leave with a short list of things to discuss—not another long form to fill out.
The recruiter's phone call is not evidence; the letter, the credential and the passport are.

Take a single sheet and draw three columns headed fixed, negotiable and government-dependent. The school year end is fixed. The hospital start date may be negotiable, but the employer must confirm that in writing. Admission in TN status at the port of entry is government-dependent and is decided by an officer looking at documents. A Torbay household that does this quickly sees that the plumbing business cannot be sold on a date chosen to match a start date that itself depends on a document the hospital has not yet written.
Meet the people in your cornerPersonal support.
A practical plan.
No promises we can’t keep.
Mark each deadline as fixed, negotiable or dependent on a government decision, and stop treating the last kind as a planning input.
Decide whether the second adult will work, and if so under which status; if the intended status forbids it, that changes the whole plan.
A written letter naming the profession, duties, credential and term is the document the port-of-entry officer reads; get it early enough to correct.
Resignations, business sales and leases follow the grant of status, not the hope of it.
Preparation that costs nothing can begin immediately: obtaining the therapist's degree transcript and provincial registration, asking the hospital in writing for a letter naming the profession and duties, and listing what the husband would actually do for income in the United States. Existing professional records may make the principal applicant's question easier to document; the spouse's trade or small-business livelihood still needs a separate plan because it does not transfer with a licence.
Find your pathwayShneur Herman, Jo Kubti and Alexander Paton review Torbay files remotely, and the first thing they do with a household like this one is separate the therapist's TN question from the husband's business question, because a TD dependant cannot run a plumbing business and no amount of planning around her offer will change that. The review reads the offer, the registration, the business's ownership and the children's dates, and produces an order of operations. It does not produce a promise about processing times, and it will say plainly when a preferred date is not achievable.
Let’s connectArrange a remote consultation to discuss your next steps.
For a Canadian citizen applying for TN at the port of entry it can be, but only if the employer letter, credential and any state licence are ready. The date should be written as conditional on admission, and no one should resign before it happens.
Not as a TD dependant; TD permits residence and study, not work, and running a business is work. He would need his own status, or the business would need to stay in Canada with someone else operating it.
Only once you know which route the money is for. E-2 requires funds committed to a real U.S. enterprise that the investor controls; selling early and holding cash proves nothing and may leave the household without income during the wait.
Enrolment can be explored, but she may attend only once admitted in a dependant status; plan the admission for the summer and treat September as the negotiable date, not the fixed one.
