IN THIS GUIDE · Explain a professional assignment that spans customer sites
Map the work before assembling the letter
Hypothetical example: an offer combines design reviews at the employer’s office with implementation visits to customers. List the duties at each location and who assigns and supervises them. Review whether the actual work fits the proposed TN profession rather than assuming a technical title resolves the question. Make a single duty matrix that pairs each task with its supervisor, deliverable and location. This exposes an itinerary that is merely logistical, as well as a customer arrangement that changes the real employer analysis.
Connect qualifications to the precise profession
Identify the listed profession and its particular credential requirements, including any permitted alternatives. Keep diplomas, transcripts and professional records tied to the relevant requirement. Canadian permanent residence is not qualifying citizenship for TN; residence in St. John’s does not alter that distinction. Ask which record proves each required qualification: a final diploma, transcript, licence, or carefully matched experience record where an alternative is permitted. A title on a résumé cannot fill a missing credential element.
Make the employment relationships understandable
Identify the employer, any intermediary and customer responsibilities. Provide the real contractual arrangement, including any applicant ownership interest, for review. A client list does not itself establish qualifying prearranged employment, and TN does not provide a general authorization for U.S. self-employment. Compare the support letter with contracts, invoices and reporting lines before relying on them. If the applicant directs the U.S. entity receiving the work, pause for a self-employment analysis rather than relabeling the relationship.
Coordinate the start with actual permission
Separate the employer’s requested date from authorization to perform the work. The current proposal should accurately describe duration and duties. If the assignment materially changes while documents are prepared, have the revised facts assessed rather than travelling with a superseded description. Set a start date that follows the final submission or admission decision, not an optimistic travel plan. A revised project scope can require a revised explanation when it changes the profession, employer or core duties.
Apply the temporary-work and credential boundaries
TN concerns qualifying temporary professional activity for Canadian or Mexican citizens. Providing services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant falls outside the permitted arrangement; a foreign business interest alone is not a blanket disqualification. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require a reliable foreign-credential evaluation. Any licence needed to practise the profession in the United States is a separate question from the listed TN qualification. Keep temporary intent grounded in the assignment’s actual terms while avoiding claims that future plans cannot support. The deciding question is whether this defined professional work fits TN now, with every required credential independently supported.
